School has ended for me, we are moving along with our adoption process and I am looking forward to fun times this summer. But 12 days ago my world was shaken. My favorite entertainer in the world passed away of a heart attack possibly caused by medications that he was taking.

I have ALWAYS been a Michael Jackson fan! Light skin, trials, wierd behavior, nothing has ever changed the way I felt about him. I was with him forever. Listening to Michael Jackson music has always been a norm for me. He is all over my mp3 player and I get a Michael fix several times a week. If you had asked me the day before he passed who my favorite singer was I would have instantly said Michael Jackson and those who know me know that as well!

My heart is so heavy because I was so excited about his upcoming concerts. I was hopeful that he would revive his career a bit with the concerts and maybe even give us one final album, but obviously his work was done.

Loving Michael hasn't always been easy. Many gave up on him because of his unconventional behavior but I am so happy that folks are remembering him for his music, dancing, and philanthropy. The music will live on and now happy memories of him will too.

I love you Michael. Rest in Peace.

Sports Mom

Well it is official, I am a Sports Mom. My son had an Opening Day ceremony and his first game for T-ball and we had a blast. Well, let's just say it was cute. It was a success because everyone had a wonderful time. The kids were well behaved, they had fun and learned a lot about the game of baseball. However, no one prepares you for the chaos of T-ball. Kids all diving for the same ball no matter where they are on the field, kids running around the bases twice, falling kids, silly kids, and confused kids. For the first 2 innings no one would throw the ball to second base, they all thought they could run it their faster. Kids that ran home all did the same thing, slide into home base. Parents were happy and cheery but confused. They say you don't keep score in T-ball, but really, how can you? There is no way. Kids are running around everywhere. I mean really, you can't even keep up with how many outs you have. Most of the time kids are just focused on what the snack of the day is. "Mommy, can I get a juice?" "When can we eat the crackers?"

My husband was the coach and I must say he was extremly organized. He also gave the batting order so that everyone could help get their child get to the appropriate place. It was a fabulous idea. The other team only had the coach and one other parent to help. Our team had an army of men all assisting. I tell you it was a sight to see. I think it is going to be a very interesting experience, fun and chaotic all at the same time. Stay tuned for an update on the next game.

What is wrong with being a rock star?

The President and First Lady are about to wrap up their first oversees trip and I believe it is safe to say they were it hit. As President Obama said, "America is back!" As I write, the President has made a surprise trip to Iraq to visit the Iraqi leaders and to meet with the troops and generals on the ground. He will of course boost the morale of those on the ground in Iraq. This trip will also show the love and respect that President Obama has gained since his election.

We have a President that we are proud of once again. Did anyone think that President Obama would go overseas and embarass us? It is just not who he is. He was raised with decency, respect and most importantly humility. I think the American people are getting a first hand lesson on the difference between confidence and cocky. He is confident in his abilities to speak, persuade, listen and act. Sounds like leadership to me. Having watched President Obama as a Senator, candidate and now President, I no longer worry about what he is going to say or do. He always hits the correct note. I am not surprised. I appreciate candor and honesty. And much of what he said about our relationship with the world is accurate and needed to be said.

And don't get me started on First Lady Michelle Obama. The right did their best to label her as a militant black woman because of her statement, "For the first time in my adult life I am really proud of my country.", which referred to the enthusiam of the American engagement in the past election. Also because in her thesis paper in college in Princton she described her experience of as black woman on a predominantly white campus and because she did not describe it as a series of cumba yah moments then again she is not proud to be an American. Well what we saw overseas is not only is she a proud American, but she represents part of what is great about her country simply because of her story and rise to success.

What we saw in Europe is that the Europeans love and praise America again. That should make Americans proud. We are back and it feels good!

Who's Fault Is It?

So the economy is in the toilet and Obama has been President for....50 days and the low stock market value is Obama's fault? Okay, so President Bush can lead for 8 years and he and his administration get no blame? Are you kidding? It is a joke, right?

The Republicans are so confused I don't even see how they can say that with a straight face. President Obama just passed the Recovery Act about a month ago and the money hasn't even been distributed yet to states. It has to least get an opportunity to take effect.

The last few days the market has been on a steady decline and the Republicans have the audacity to say that is the market responding negatively to the plan. Let's be serious. Republicans have no ground to stand on with this issue and thank God, based on recent polls, the American people seem to agree. Obama's poll numbers are still quite high and they are giving him time for his policies to take effect.

The funny thing is the last 3 days the dow was a surge and over the weekend the Republicans on the talk shows all tried to say that Bush deserves some credit for the up tick. So let me get this straight, if it is bad it is all Obama's fault and if it is good for a few days the Bush and Obama can share the credit?

Republicans you are on a thin line to irrelevancy. I would be very careful if I were you.

On another note, last week the question was is Obama trying to handle to much at one time? Can he really fix the economy, heath care, education and the wars at the same time? Again, this country is so confused after 8 years of mediocrity. We don't even know real leadership when we see it! Speaking each day for about and hour and introducing your team that is going to work on the issue is not my idea of him spending too much time on important topics. What he is doing is leading. He is deligating the take to a team of experts, telling them to get to work based on his vision and he will then have the report back in a few months with a report. That is what he did in terms of health care, education and the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. Now President Obama can turn his attention solely on the economy. It is the economy stupid, and he knows that. Everybody, just chill and watch realy leadership in action. It make take us a little while to know what competence looks like, but I gaurantee you will like it.

G.O.P. did you forget....

Okay. Did the Republicans forget they lost? Did they forget the economy fell apart under their watch? Did they forget we are in two wars because of them? I am just wondering because they seem to really be trying to set the agenda. They are really trying to get the public to listen to them and their opinions. But as a I recall we have been listening to them for about 8 years and where did that get us?

It is quite noble that Obama wants to be bipartisan, but based on the results of the presidential election and the congressional election, aren't democrats well within their rights to ignore them? I think the answer is yes.

So, Republicans don't expect too much love from Obama. I mean, I get the feeling he is going to listen for only so long. At some point, your ideas are just bad for America right now and the great thing about it is we now have proof, 8 years of it. So, Republicans just chill for a while. Obama is already letting you talk to much now, so I wouldn't push it if I were you. He might eventually shut you up for good.

Just a few words of advice, take it or leave it.

Inauguration Thoughts

Well the inauguration weekend is over and honestly this blog will not truly express my feelings because this is an experience that I will reflect on for years to come. But I can say that the whole entire experience was electric and breathtaking. I just witnessed in person the first African American man become President of the United States. This is something that history books will discuss 100 years for now. Sadly, Americans have talked about where were you when 9/11 happened or where were you when you heard about Katrina, or the space shuttle, but as a friend reminded me ,we now have something positive to describe our whereabouts. I am glad I can say, I was there.

The weekend began when a friend gave me surprise tickets to attend an inaugural ball on Saturday, then my husband and my dad and I went to Lincoln Memorial concert on Sunday and of course all of us attended the inauguration. I was lucky enough to get two tickets because I worked extensively on the campaign, so a few friends had pity on me, much to my benefit. It is still a shock that I was so privileged to attend so many events during the inauguration weekend. I had never been to an inauguration before so it was totally cool.

The day began early, 2am to be exact, just to get to the Metro station and catch the first train. So needless to say, it was a long day. I was tired, cold, hungry, sore and excited, nervous, overwhelmed and thrilled at the same time. I was taking pictures the entire time, but only of the Jumbo tron. I had tickets, so I was close to the Capitol, but my tickets had me seated to President's Obama far left. I could not see him at all, therefore we had to use the Jumbrotron. My tickets were beneficial in that I saw several celebrities going to their seats. It was pretty cool, but I wish had a direct view of the inauguration.

In my section there people of all ages, different races, but I must admit, to see so many large numbers of African Americans was awesome. People were just so happy and enthusiastic even though it was so cold. I saw waving flags, tears and smiles. I shared my ticket with my mom. That was cool as well because we were able to witness such a historical moment together.

It took me along time to finish this post because I just couldn't wrap my brain around my emotions. I went days and just cried for no apparent reason. I couldn't believe I was living in a time such as this, but then I remembered what I have know forever. The only thing I can think of to justify my privilege can be summed up in one word, blessed. I am truly blessed to be able to witness this.

Inauguration Woes

So I am gearing up to attend the inauguration. I plan on attending the concert on Sunday evening and of course the swearing in ceremony on Tuesday. I am really bummed that I can't go to ball, but we just can't afford it. The Obama team has done a remarkable job trying to make this an inauguration that average folks can attend, but we just can't swing the balls. There is a Neighborhood ball that went public today and they are even distributing tickets to the Youth Ball to local area Boys and Girls clubs. So really folks will have an opportunity to attend the events. But oh well, the concert and the swearing in are just enough for me.

However ,I am really disappointed at some of the people that live in this area. My husband and I can't find anyone that plans on attending. Everyone has an excuse. It will be too long, too cold, no bathrooms, too many people. Come on, are you kidding me? Do you really want to say you watched this moment on tv? I just don't understand it. But hey, to each is own. But I will be there, husband and 5 year old son. We can handle a little discomfort to be a part of this moment. We live in the DC area. I am too close to stay home. Six days and counting!

History cont...

Well I have not written in almost 2 months. I let the holidays pass and I decided to wait until before inauguration day to write. So much has happened. I still tingle whenever I hear President-elect Barack Obama, or if I see another appointment he has made or simply see him in a news conference. I still have to pinch myself. I can't believe we did it. Like right now he is on t.v. saying "my administration". I can't wrap my brain around it. But that doesn't even make sense because I have continued since he announced saying that he could win, but I still can not believe it. I can't believe this country. We made a decision based on issues. We did not hold his race against him.

As we know, Barack Obama has a lot of work to do. He has an economy in shambles, 2 wars, an energy crisis, and just plain lack of confidence in the government. But I am glad he is in the drivers seat!

So, let me play catch.

1. Blagojevich is, well, let's just say bold. Roland Burris is a prime example of an old school black politician. Just seeking limelight with no substance. Why on earth would you want a seat that is simply tainted, but oh I forgot you are a washed up politician and you are a little jealous of all the love Obama receives. Roland Burris, I am sure you will become Senator now, but honestly, how much respect do you think you are going to get? You are allowing Blagojevich to use you. Does the limelight feel good, no matter how much people are laughing at you?

2. Obama Cabinet choices, B+. I would have liked to see a few more black men, I believe 2, Eric Holder for Attorney General, and someone as trade rep. Overall really good.

3. Governor Palin, go AWAY! Get over it. You are not smart and we all saw it. So don't be a sore loser and lash out at Couric and Tina Fey. Palin, just go away!

4. Republicans, take a breath. You lost. If you were smart you would really take some time to get it together. You will have 8 years to figure it out. Obama is not going anywhere.

5. Bush, you suck. Why won't you let the Obama's stay in the Blair house? Because one dude is staying there on the 12th you will not let the incoming first family stay there. Simply ridiculous.

6. Welcome to the Washington Metro area Obama family. Words can not express how happy we are to have you.

7. Congressional Democrats, please remember who the party leader is. Do the right thing.

8. Americans, don't miss the inauguration because you don't want to be bothered. Do you really want to say you stayed on for the "March on Washington" moment? I don't.

9. Inauguration committee, please stop scaring everyone to death. Do you want anyone to come? You are doing your best to deter folks and it is not right. You basically say kids are not welcome, you can't bring anything, you close VA off to the city, and you basically close the city. What gives? I am going and there is nothing you can do to stop me.

10. So, what will I do for the inauguration? My family plans to be on the Mall somewhere. If I can hear Obama I will be happy. I just want to be in the midst with the energy, the joy, the excitement and history. I will be cold, tired, funky, inritable but at the same time overjoyed. My son, 5 years old, will be with me. We will all get through it together but I will not let my family miss this event. We will be there and I can't wait. Obama, here we come.

Mr. President

I am too overwhelmed with emotion to write a coherent blogpost tonight. As a supporter of Barack Obama, I like the position we are in. We are leading nationally as well as in the states that matter. But these are assumed votes. People, we still have to vote either now if you have early voting or on election day. Don't follow the polls! We still have so much work to do. If you have not done one thing for the candidate, I am going to say it, you should be ashamed! If you are a supporter I know you are voting and quite honestly that is your duty as an american to vote, no matter who it is for. But if you have made your choice, get out their and make a few calls, canvass, talk to your friends and donate your money. Go up to your local Obama office and ask, "What do you need?" We have not won this thing yet, but we have one more week so get going!

Now, let me switch gears for a moment. Did African Americans all get the memo that the media and the public has decided to use affirmative action in reference to the Presidency? Did you all know that? The new talking point is the media has helped him and he would not be here if it were not for the media. I am not so sure that Obama knew that. Did we forget about Rezco, Ayers, plagiarism, bitter and of course Wright. I mean really, apparently the media feels that they maybe they have not been as fair to McCain as they have been to Obama. Or not been as fair to Palin as they have been to Biden. Okay, let me break this down for you.

The bottom line is that both of the old guys are boring! McCain is boring. He sounds boring, looks boring and really he is just wrong on the issues this year. It is not the Republican year! They are on the wrong side of the issues. McCain sounds crazy and I think he believes it is 1988 when words like liberal, taxes, redistribution of wealth and socialist mean anything. I really believe that almost more than race, but age has been the real elephant in the room. The young guy sounds vibrant, fresh and new and honestly he is talking to the country, not a select few. I mean, is it coincidence that Obama can draw 100,000 and McCain is happy to get 5,000? The young guy is speaking to everyone! All people can find something to follow in Obama's words. That is why the media covers it. Also, that is partly why the media covers Sarah Palin. (I will have another post about her after the election.) She is young, new and has energized the base, but her problem is that she is not prepared, that is why the media covers it. When she speaks nothing substantive comes out. So for all the Republicans who read this, this is one reason you are losing. Your candidate is too old and he chose a young running mate who just crystallizes that point. Get use to it.

Black is Back Baby!!!

Well, I am witnessing a truly awesome time in our history. People are excited, thrilled and hopeful of the future. Finally change is coming. What am I talking about? Of course the surge of African Americans in baseball once again!

This is America's pastime, no matter what the NFL says. African Americans were apart of the history of this great sport. Blacks spent Sunday's attending and or playing baseball. When you think of the greateat African American atheletes, who is at the top of your list, but none other than Jackie Robinson.

Tonight, I just witnessed the Tampa Bay Rays win the American League Champship led by BJ Upton, Carl Crawford and new star David Price (last year's first pick in the draft.) Their opponent in the World Series are National League Champions Philadephia Phillies led by Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins, the last two National League MVPs. This is a major turning point for African Americans in the sport of baseball. African Americans will be showcased in the World Series and that has not happened in a long, long time.

African Americans have been preoccupied with basketball and football, both of which we dominate, but baseball will be coming back after this World Series is completed. Young black boys can find new stars to emulate because of these young stars in baseball.

I am hopeful that baseball finds it way back into the lives and history of African Americans. I could go into why I feel that baseball lost it luster, but that is another posting. Congratulations to both of these teams and I look forward to a great World Series.

Thirty Days and Counting....

Wow, so much time has passed since Feb 12, 2007 when Barack Obama announced his run for President. Now we are thirty days from election day and the finish line is in sight for us. I have been apart of this movement from day one. I have made calls, donated, registered, canvassed, blogged, emailed supporters and just all in all had a big mouth. Every time I can mention Obama's name or bring him into the conversation I try to do that. I have worked my but off for not just Obama ,but for this country. This country needs Barack Obama!

Now thirty days from election day and we are looking pretty good, but it does not mean I will stop working and get comfortable. We have much work to do because the attacks are coming. So much has changed in two weeks. The economy is falling, we have had one Presidential debate and the only Vice-Presidential debate. Neither was a major game changer, but Obama passed the Presidential threshold test for those who were wondering. McCain was angry and had complete disdain for Obama, which explains why he wouldn't even give a fellow US Senator the respect of looking at him. Palin did not look like a total idiot, but we know now for sure she has NO substance and Biden, as we already knew is, keenly aware of the issues and ready to be President if necessary. Palin, not so much.
So we have two more Presidential debates left, will they be game changers? I don't think so. The next one is a town hall style format, which is supposed to be good for McCain, but Obama is good in those as well, but we will soon see. The McCain camp has to do something to change the story. They will talk about Ayers, no connection to Obama, Rev. Wright and anything else they can think of. They don't want to talk about the economy because they have no answers. Now is the time when we have to buckle down, and just charge our way to the finish line. They are going to throw everything they can think of at us. So let's hold on tight. Think of a roller coaster and thus far we have been riding up the hill before the big drop. Well, now is the time for the big drop. The next 30 days will fly by. But we must keep calling, donating, canvassing, emailing and anything else we can do to get the word out. Barack Obama must be our next President. I am going to do everything I can to make that happen. What are you going to do?

Check This Out

http://www.thatminoritything.com/?p=53193

Just some things to think about.....

My, My, My Do the Tables Turn

So, Gov. Palin is qualified to handle national security issues? Gov. Palin believes the war is God's plan? Gov. Palin believes that women can't just complain, they have just work harder, smarter, and that Sen. Clinton was whining? Gov. Palin feels she was unfairly treated? All of these were questions that the media has posed this past week, but have not been able to ask because the McCain campaign has not made their VP candidate available for interviews. What is up with that? How can potentially the 2nd most powerful person in the free world not conduct one interview? So, we can't ask the most qualified person McCain could have chosen to be VP, so his campaign says, we can't ask her one question? Wow, the media feels slighted and screwed at the same time. They can't ask or discuss her personal family choices such as agreeing to run for president while having 5 children, one with special needs and a grandchild on the way, and they can't even ask her about her ideas and beliefs on pertinent issues that face this country. But you know what, the media wants the interview but the country needs the answers. I hope that the media continue to press the McCain campaign to let them talk to her. But then the McCain campaigns says she was thoroughly vetted, when we all know that is what they are doing now. The McCain camp needs to find out more about her before the media does.

He needs to be vetted. We don't really know him. We need to know what he stands for. These were the constant statements made against Sen. Obama and now 19 months later, I can say we know quite a lot a bout him. We know his family, his personal problems of the past, church beliefs, friends past and present and anything else you want to find out. But now when the tables turn we don't need to know much about Palin. Interesting.

The media has been the 3rd candidate in this election season for so long that sometimes it is interesting that the news of the day is sometimes about the media's role in the election. They have constantaly struggled to find their way and once again they are struggling. First Obama was getting easy press, which for the life of me I can't understand, but I guess for the McCain camp, bad press is better than no press at all. I really don't think constant clips and discussions about Rev. Wright, forced connections with Tony Rezko, bittergate, and plagiraism gate are good press, but maybe that is just me. So now when the tables turn and the press is seeking for anything they can learn about Sarah Palin and then it is reported, now there is a gender bias. Palin, if you are going to join with the big boys, please tell the big boys to shut up and that you can stand up for yourself, that is if you can. I think everytime women holler sexism, but it is the man that complains about it, we are retreating because we are not fighting our battles ourselves. Palin, please speak! Stand up for yourself! If you have something to say and more importantly something to contribute, please do it. I think you are losing the woman's vote that your camp claims they were not aiming for, I believe you are losing them daily.

Will It Help Us Eat?

So the news of the Sen. McCain's VP choice is all over the networks and it turns out to be Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska. She is not very well know because she has only been Govenor for about a year and a half. She basically pales in comparison to the VP pick of Joe Biden. Although Republican strategists have tried to say she is experienced they are truly grasping at straws. Their response has been she is about as experienced as Sen. Obama, which I know they have to believe is a stretch to say the least, but nevertheless that is their argument. So I assume that experience will be off the table. There is no way that McCain can talk about Obama not being ready when each time Obama speaks he proves more and more he is ready. Palin does not compare to Biden. So we wait for the first debate.

Many believe it is basically a choice to hopefully get some of the angry Clinton voters, but I question the success of that as she is ultra conservative. I ask the Clinton supporters, will any woman do? I don't think so . She is opposed to abortion rights in all cases including rape and incest. Is that what Hillary Clinton fought for ladies? I don't think so.

Interesting enough, these are the very issues that the Republican party chose to tell us about Palin during her introduction. Her anti abortion, pro-gun, pro-drilling issues that will definitely secure the Republican base, but I ask, will these issues help us eat? Is this what America really wants to talk about?

During the primary Barack got in trouble for saying that sometimes voters are bitter and vote guns and religion and oftentimes vote against their own self interests. Is that what McCain is banking on yet again? It seems that way. Not that abortion is not important because it is especially when you look at the potential impact to Supreme Court justices, but will this issue help us eat?

Economy has slowly but sure come to the front of this campaign and we know from past comments that McCain doesn't have very much to add to this issue. By choosing Palin we know that McCain is trying to pivot from the economy to those hot button issues that won't help us eat because something tells me that as governor of Alaska, sadly she may not have much to add to the economy discussion either.

Barack's Moment

All I can say is, "Wow!" I unfortunately did not get to see the moment live, but I did DVR it. I listened to the entire speech. I will definitely have to hear it again. Barack Obama had such a difficult task and he like an instrument playing a musical score he it every note! He was tasked with explaining and exciting at the same time. He did a great job explaining his stance on issues to those voters who had never really heard him on the stump. He explained what change would look like in clear and uncertain terms. That is so unimportant to me as I have always been a supporter, but it was crucial to hear for so many people.

Sen. Obama also still took time to excite and give hope. That is what he is most known for and I listened to his speech and left with the same excitement and zeal as I always do. He walked a thin line and did it beautifully. I am so proud of him!

Democratic Convention

It is Day 3 of the Democratic Convention and so much has happened since my last political blogpost. Sen. Obama chose Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as he VP pick. Most feel that it was a good choice. Sen. Biden has strong foreign policy credability and he is tough. He can say things that Obama won't and can't say. I was extremely happy with the choice and was excited about my 3am text message about the announcement!

Day 1 of the Convention featured Michelle Obama and she was fabulous. She tugged at the heart strings of America. She let you know about her life and Sen. Obama's life. I think America really got to see what makes this family tick. At the end of her speech when Sen. Obama appeared it was so beautiful to hear is lovely daughters asking where their daddy was. Such a natural and private moment that the world was able to see.

On Day 2, Sen. Clinton knocked it out of the park! She explained in no uncertain terms, regardless of what the right wants to tell you, why we should vote for Barack Obama! She reminded Democrats of their duty and their focus on the issues. When she asked, "Were you in this for me? Or was it because of the important issues of the day?" That was a pivotal question that Hillary supporters will have to reflect upon. I am sure that if they listened to her they will follow their instincts and what they know is right and support Sen. Obama. Sen. Clinton did what she needed to do and her speech reminded me of why I have always loved the Clinton family. Thank you Sen. Clinton for leading the way toward unity in the Democratic party.

Stay tuned to my posting for Day 3 which will feature President Clinton. I just wanted to take the time to express how much I enjoyed the Olympics. I stayed up late like much of America on the east coast and watched most of the competitons. I was so proud of so many atheletes such as the gymnastics teams, men's basketball (I did not see the woman much) and of course Michael Phelps. Everyone was phenomenal and represented the United States well. We should all be proud of their behavior and their performances. The word likely is so freakin important we always conveniently forget that likely is not Barack's electorate! Don't forget what we have learned for 19th months. Barack is steady, disciplined, intelligent, patient, strong and tough! He will never be just right for anybody. The media spends all of its time talking about McSame and we fall into their trap everytime. Now we have the final push of the Clintonistas (to use Ed Shultz's term) to choose her has VP. If he does fine, if he doesn't fine! But stop acting like all of a sudden you know what is the right thing to do. Either way we know something is going to be wrong with his pick. The media will spend more time analyzing his choice then they ever will for McSame. Barack should be able to depend on us, his supporters, to support whom ever he picks. Stop trying the drive the car of his campaign when you don't even have a damn license! Stop trying to be experts of his next steps! Go be an expert at calling, canvanssing, and raising money. Barack does not need us analyzing every move he makes. It simply isn't fair. Please trust him. We go through this at every bump in the road. We have so much work yet to do it is unbelievable and you all want to do summersaults on one poll. Sometimes you all act like the campaign has been messing up all along and that they work in a bubble. They watch TV, they read, they know what moves they have to make. Trust them to make them. Not because I think he will make a bad choice, but just so we can get rolling with the analysis. Either way the media will find something wrong with it. I happen to believe that anyone would be okay for him, it just depends on the route you go. Will it be a geographical choice, so you can pick up a state? Will it be a foreign policy choice? Or will it be a nice safe choice? Either way I am just happy it is his choice. So I wait and wait, and wait for my text message from the campaign. It will come soon enough.
